Passages ~ by Alison Scher
In Conscious Dancer Fall 2011 Issue 16
Recently I spent a life-changing week dancing my way through a rite of passage. Used around the world, this ritual celebrates a milestone in someone's life, a period during which they must change in order to evolve.
My own experience was at Bamboo YogaPlay in Costa Rica, where Sofiah Thom creates custom-designed journeys. "Cultures all over the world celebrate pivotal moments in our lives," says Thom. "I'm passionate about offering modern-day rites of passageusing movement, consciousness, and empowerment practices."

"Through movement you discover the stories held inside your body; and through the power of expression and creativity, you begin to write the new ones." ~ Sofiah Thom
I met Sofiah Thom through a friend of mine who told me I absolutely had to meet her and her husband Brendan when I was down in Costa Rica. I heard they had a beautiful yoga studio and accompanying lodging there—a perfect complement to the "roughin' it" mentality my travel partner and I had had throughout most of our two weeks in CR.
When we showed up, we immediately fell in love. Not only could we get our first yoga session in since our trip began, but we could also relax in our lovely room and covered porch overlooking the trees of Dominical. We felt that after so many long hikes and crazy adventures, this was the perfect way to end our trip. It was.
Embodying Grace ~ by Keri Goldenhar-Lassalle

Sofiah Thom - Giving Form To Freedom and Grace

Her fingers flick the air, her toes are in flight and everything in between is captivatingly fluid. As Sofiah Thom's body responds to an earthy pulse of drums, one cannot help but be deeply moved by her embodiment of form, freedom and grace. The electricity in her dance flows through the rather large Berkeley audience in waves of recognition. Whatever it is that she is expressing is at once human, yet somehow unexplainably divine.
